Macrotermes natalensis termite colonies in seasonally flooded savannas

چکیده
In seasonally inundated landscapes of southern central Africa very large termite mounds Macrotermes natalensis offer a refuge for flood-intolerant trees during the flood season. matrix landscape surrounding these islands waterlogged and then anaerobic soil conditions browsing by megaherbivores dry season allow grass herbaceous vegetation only. During rainy each termitarium forms an isolated island which due to its relative dryness allows survival associated fauna. termites try establish new colonies with mounds. However, successful formation termitaria seems be rare event. this case study from Dundumwezi in Kafue National Park, Zambia, we provide description their vegetation. Furthermore, analyse spatial patterns mound surroundings Park und Bangweulu Plains / Kasanka based on remote sensing imagery. Our results confirm that competition among homogeneous habitats causes regular patterns.

Directional vibration sensing in the termite Macrotermes natalensis.
Although several behavioural studies demonstrate the ability of insects to localise the source of vibrations, it is still unclear how insects are able to perceive directional information from vibratory signals on solid substrates, because time-of-arrival and amplitude difference between receptory structures are thought to be too small to be processed by insect nervous systems. The termite Macro...
متن کاملThe fungus-growing termite Macrotermes natalensis harbors bacillaene-producing Bacillus sp. that inhibit potentially antagonistic fungi
The ancient fungus-growing termite (Mactrotermitinae) symbiosis involves the obligate association between a lineage of higher termites and basidiomycete Termitomyces cultivar fungi. Our investigation of the fungus-growing termite Macrotermes natalensis shows that Bacillus strains from M. natalensis colonies produce a single major antibiotic, bacillaene A (1), which selectively inhibits known an...
متن کاملA Preliminary Study on Elimination of Colonies of the Mound Building Termite Macrotermes gilvus (Hagen) Using a Chlorfluazuron Termite Bait in the Philippines
The effectiveness of a chlorfluazuron termite bait in eliminating colonies of the termite species Macrotermes gilvus (Hagen) was evaluated under field conditions. Three active termite mounds were chosen for this study, two acted as test mounds and the other as the control. Four In-Ground Stations (IGS) were installed around each mound. Interception occurred almost immediately in all the station...
متن کاملDivergence times in the termite genus Macrotermes (Isoptera: Termitidae).
The evolution of fungus-growing termites is supposed to have started in the African rain forests with multiple invasions of semi-arid habitats as well as multiple invasions of the Oriental region. We used sequences of the mitochondrial COII gene and Bayesian dating to investigate the time frame of the evolution of Macrotermes, an important genus of fungus-growing termites. We found that the gen...
متن کاملFlight activity of two sympatric termite species, Macrotermes gilvus and Macrotermes carbonarius (Termitidae: Macrotermitinae).
Flight activities of two sympatric termite species, Macrotermes gilvus (Hagen) and Macrotermes carbonarius (Hagen), were studied in Penang Island, Malaysia. Herein, we present the first documentation of chronological reproductive isolation of M. gilvus and M. carbonarius. Flights of M. gilvus were recorded over a remarkably long 7-mo period from March to September, whereas swarming of M. carbon...
